Review of Amazon Echo Dot 2

Pros: Great voice recognition, does things that are actually useful

Cons: Limited features (especially in Canada), serious privacy concerns, rough UI for the app

Buy? Yes, I recommend it.

My wife got me an unexpected Christmas present - an Amazon Echo Dot. It's the smallest of Amazon's voice-recognition "helper" appliances (I really don't know what to call these things).

It's essentially like Siri, but I can sit it in my kitchen and ask it to do things for me and not need my phone at all. And, despite the fact that I consider myself a bit of a gadget luddite, it turns out I have a WeMo plug, and Spotify, and a Bose Soundlink bluetooth speaker, all of which tie into the Dot and make them so much more usable.

What do I use it for? I'm glad you asked:

I can say "Alexa, turn off the lights" and all my living room lights turn off. It's all of the joys of a "clapper" in the modern age. Really useful when I leave the house.

While cooking, I just say "Alexa, play my folk playlist" and my Spotify playlist starts playing.

It's really just US based right now, so I can't even ask it for my local weather which is a bit annoying. And the always-on mic freaks my luddite self out a bit. I know the connected future feels inevitable, but has everyone forgotten about PRIVACY???!

For $50, it's total steal - and obviously something Amazon wants to use as a bit of a lost-leader in the hopes you'll buy my Amazon shit. But whatevs.

I paid $50
